In January 2023, multiple body-worn cameras were released of police horrifically repeatedly tasing my brother INSIDE an ambulance while he was coming out of a seizure and still confused not even knowing they were police or where he was per their own admission in their police reports, then removing him from the ambulance and walking him to their police car still confused, tasing him inside the police car, laughing about what they'd done, and then speaking with their sergeant as they tried to come up with a charge for him, because they'd been called out a medical call when a Burger King employee called 911 for medical attention after witnessing my brother experience a seizure in the drive-thru after coherently placing his order, which my brother's car to hit the truck in front of him in the drive-thru. https://www.kwtx.com/2023/02/14/body-camera-footage-shows-killeen-man-being-tased-six-times-by-police-while-inside-ambulance/
Subsequently, the Judge ruled the officers lacked probable cause for their detention and arrest.
My brother is the only son of five children. He is younger than me. When he was a kid, I never missed his football and baseball games. I would ride in the car with my brother and one of his Coaches....cheering my little brother on. When I was in undergraduate/college, my brother -- a high school student -- came to live with me. As adults, we remained very close. Living in different states, we kept in very frequent contact. Seeing him on video after video as an adult crying out in pain as they tased him, not even knowing what was going on or where he was, awakening still confused to multiple searing jolts of electricity being seared through his body by unknown people... was devastating.
Adversity has human faces. Injustice comes in all forms.
Later that year, on November 9, 2023, four days before his birthday....my brother died.I was crushed. He had been a CDL driver for years, one of the trucker heroes driving almost daily during COVID to deliver essential goods. He died unexpectedly at work. I was on a virtual meeting when my sister called and gave me the news. Our brother is gone!! Tears.....My brother's wife/my sister-in-law serves our country in the Reserve and is an Educator My oldest sister is retired Army. I served in the Army. Our older cousins are all retired Army. My younger sister is a Principal. My youngest sister is in healthcare. All of my cousins are alive. Our mother is alive. All of my siblings are alive....until now.I planned his funeral from a different state. I coordinated flying his body from one state to another. I planned his funeral in that state. I eulogized him. He left behind a loving wife and two sons. I could not allow his legacy to die. I cannot allow the world to forget he lived. Picture after picture...body-worn camera after body-worn camera...my brother.
A few months later on March 5, 2024, my oldest nephew was violently murdered. I'd help raised him as a child because my youngest sister had him as a teenager. He was like my son to me. Even as an adult, we still were close. I have pictures with him all throughout his life span. Brutally murdered. Gone. Tears....I was in a deposition when I got the call. This time from a different sister. But the same result. I planned his funeral from a different state. I coordinated his funeral. I eulogized him. He is gone. It was crushing.
The funerals. The first holidays without them. The birthdays without them. The memorial of the days of their deaths.Planning to see my nephew at the family event that never happened.
Routinely picking up the phone to call my brother to talk only to realize he will never answer again.
I am 54 years old.
In all my life I have never known myself to be weak.
I have served our country served the community served my profession served my God served my Family. I don't know anyone who knows me who would have described me as weak or needy. I have always been strong. I have always been the rock. I have always been the Fighter. I have always supported everyone else. For the first time in my life, Adversity had overtaken me. The devastating effects which I would not learn until much later in therapy...
I share this with you because one thing I've now learned to be true is that people need to know it is alright to experience and share your tribulation. It is not your fault that life is lifing. Undergoing trials, attacks, or tribulations, does not mean that you are a bad person. Life is not always a bed of roses, and you are no longer required to wear the mask of perfection to hide pain, nor to suffer alone because you must be the warrior for everyone else. Adversity W.I.LL. come. It comes in the form of human faces. Injustice will rise. It too comes in the form of human faces. It seeks to destroy you. It takes pleasure in believing itself to have more power than God. But be encouraged! Take heart! For the Lord your God is with you! His rod and staff, they comfort you! God sees your pain. He hears your cries. He perceives your battle. And He has already ordained your Victory. So hold on and don't give up. Remember who you are. Your best days are ahead!
STAND!!
I look forward to serving you.
